My Two Hard Workers

Today after about an hour of talking and crying in his bed, I finally decided that a nap wasn’t on the horizon with Zach. He decided to help his dada build the futon instead.

We’ve been thinking about getting a futon for our basement for awhile (remember back to the couch saga? One of those couches was *supposed* to be for the basement). Today there was one on sale at Canadian Tire, and Mike had had his eye on it for awhile because ‘the wood [didn’t] look cheap’. Mike thought he’d be able to build it in 20 minutes, but after realizing it was taking some effort to get it out of the packaging, we decided to go to IKEA instead. So when we returned from IKEA, he began the futon-building process, which probably took more like three hours. Zach joined him about halfway through, to help and to examine the workmanship.

He ‘helped’ Mike put on some sort of adhesive pad, and was very curious about it for awhile after. That included tasting it, of course!

Attack of the beaver.... he thinks the wood is good!

He also had to check out the workmanship for a different angle that perhaps his dad didn’t check…

Got a screw loose, dada?

The futon is all put together now and looks great. Mike was right- the wood doesn’t look cheap ;) I was lying on the futon while Zach played with his new car mat from IKEA, and I felt very comfortable, as well as content with my happy boy.

Good job Mike and Zachy!

Basement Renovations, Part 2

Things are going pretty good with the basement renovations – all the old holes are patched, the new ones are created and all the walls have been painted (primed). On to the boring part of the operation – taping. With a little help from Julia and Zach I was able to get everything taped up – at least the area where I was going to start the first coat (a light blue).

Mommy and Zach are happy that dad finally started painting

I’ve learned a few things about painting since my first go-around when we initially painted the room that ugly brown color a little over two years ago. Back then, I was pressing on the roller so hard that I ended up not covering all the walls smoothly. There were quite a few spots where the old color (yellow) showed through. This time I’ve learned my lesson!

While I was busy painting, Julia and Zach did some playing:

I’m hoping to have everything done – including speakers installed and wired – before a little birthday get-together on Saturday night. Will have to see how it goes. It will certainly make for an extra busy week!

Although this has nothing to do with painting, Julia took this adorable picture of the back of Zach’s head. He was on the floor in our bedroom playing with some of his toys.
